Life of a woman is easy — nobody said EVER. Hear it, accept it, digest it, and move on.
I mean let’s face it, isn’t the uterus already making our lives hell that we have to deal with all the biases and the high expectations of everyone around us also. We practically live our lives for everyone else and if we ask for anything, we are tagged as selfish and dominating. Especially after marriage we are expected to do all household chores with as much efficiency with which we work in our offices, and being tired is not an option.
We are expected to make sacrifices and we mould ourselves according to the situation. I read all these articles online on how you lose one family over another and how we entirely lose ourselves. I can just say one thing to every Indian woman out there. Just hang it there ladies!
One, do not expect your in-laws to consider you a member of the family on day one.
I know that you were your father’s princess but you should also remember how he made you strong to face the different challenges in life.
He wanted you to be happily married and you need to make yourself happy. No one is going to welcome you and make you feel like “Ghar ki Laxmi” like they show in the movies. You need to create your space, you need to be heard.
It is not your fault that you are not exactly what your mother-in-law wanted. Give her time to accept you. If she thinks that you are stealing her son away, show her, that you are not.
You are her daughter-in-law, and that is the truth, she has to accept you and love you the way you are and she will. Love her and care for her. She probably has been dealing with her own set of fears.
Of course, there are a different set of rules in the same house for a daughter and a daughter-in-law. But the truth is that you are here to stay. Make that your most powerful weapon.
If people compare you with others, don’t panic. Someone must keep the house clean better than you and someone must be a better cook than you. Do your best, but don't keep looking out for the report card, and definitely don't expect to be a topper of the class. There is no ideal woman in this world and if you strive to become one, there will be only one thing you will achieve for certain - stress.
So, relax and breathe! You're going through a very difficult phase right now but you need to believe that everything is going to be fine.
Change does not come overnight, give it time. You deserve the best, so don’t leave any stone unturned.
Do your best and one day the ball is definitely going to be in your court. It sure is going to be a long battle. But remember, you are not alone in this fight.
