Miracles happen every day. Some people don't think so, but I am a living proof that they do. One such miracle happened in my life on 28th January, 2016. I had taken an off from work that day and was waiting to meet a guy my dad had chosen for me.
I was excited about getting married, but wanted some time to get to know the guy well, before we tied the knot. I knew my parents would take the best decision for me and wouldn’t get me married to someone without my consent.
So, that morning, I got ready to meet the guy my dad had chosen for me. Dad went to pick him up from his hotel room. He had travelled all the way from Abu Dhabi to meet me. I dressed up in a royal blue Anarkali suit and was sitting in my room meddling with my phone, waiting for him. Soon, the door bell rang, my mom checked herself in the mirror and opened the door. He stepped into the living room, bowed down to touch her feet and lay back on the sofa comfortably.
I was still sitting in my room, trying to eavesdrop on their conversation and waiting for my parents to call for me. All of a sudden, my mom came running into my room and excitedly told me that the guy was very respectful and extremely good-looking, as well, “like a Bollywood star”, she said. Not knowing what to reply, I just smiled at her.
I had always dreamt about finding my prince charming in a typical, dramatic Bollywood way, but this idea of an “arranged marriage” seemed kinda boring to me and it failed to impress me much.
Finally it was time for both of us to meet. I geared up for the awkwardness I was about to witness and stepped out of my room. There he sat, dressed in a maroon sweatshirt and blue jeans. The color suited him well. I am sure any girl would have fallen in love with him at first sight.
But, I don’t get along with strangers easily and so left him to do all the talking. He briefed me about himself and his family. It all seemed very new to me and I didn’t know how to revert back to it. So I left it to my parents to decide. I was physically present there but was actually lost in my own dreamy world. I was imagining wind blowing in my hair, bells clinging, butterflies fluttering and cupid saying “He is the one you were waiting for”, just like they show in the movies. But of course, nothing of this sort happened that day.
It seemed unfair to me to decide to spend the rest of my life with someone I had only met for about 20 minutes. My parents liked him in every aspect -- from his behaviour to his nature but they too wanted a second opinion from my brother. The next day, my entire family sat together and discussed how to proceed further.
Sometimes quick decisions are the best and that’s exactly what happened with me. To my surprise, my engagement was fixed with him within a week after we met, and we got engaged to each other on 5th February, 2016.
We had a small family get together with our near and dear ones. After the engagement, time ran its course and soon our big day arrived when we vowed to spend our entire life together. What followed this was a beautiful marriage and a great companionship. After our wedding, though, we couldn’t stay together as my career demanded that I continue working from Chennai.
My husband supported my decision and stood by it. Even though he went back to Abu Dhabi and I started staying with my parents in Chennai again, we fell for each other as time passed.
Yes, there were highs and lows initially but overall it has been an amazing journey filled with love, care and affection, so far. We keep the spark alive by talking to each other over phone and Skype, always making time for each other.
He does everything to bring a smile to my face and even I would sacrifice anything just to see him happy. He never leaves a chance to fly down to India just to meet me. It has been 8 months since we got married and since then, he has travelled for miles, almost every month, just to meet me.
We share an inseparable bond and understand each other’s silences too. He has become my first thought in the morning, my last thought at night and every other thought in between.
Every single day that I spend being his wife, I realize how lucky I am to be living such an amazing life. God knew exactly what I needed when he sent my husband in my life. He has taught me the real meaning of relationships. He considers both his family and mine, his priority. Being with him makes me feel like a princess whose prince charming has come alive just to give her, her fairy tale.
He is the reason why my perception of arranged marriages has changed.
I can now proudly say that I am the wife of an ideal husband. I have got the best in-laws a girl could dream of. I have a caring mother-in-law and an amazing family. It’s been a year since we first met each other and I am lucky to have found such a loving and caring family. The relationship we share cannot be expressed through words. I am thankful to everybody who helped us come together.
I know we don’t get to see and be with each other, every day. But my dear husband, if you are reading this I want to tell you that if my life was a ship, you would be the anchor that holds me in place. You would be the sails that take me on a beautiful journey. My life’s biggest achievement is that I got to be the wife to the world’s most adorable man. I love you.
